Elizabeth Peratrovich Day

Crowds of people gathered on Sunday to celebrate Elizabeth Peratrovich Day at the Juneau Tlingit and Haida Community Council and to honor the release of the 2020 Elizabeth Peratrovich gold dollar coin. This day marked the 75th anniversary of the speech by Elizabeth Peratrovich before the territorial legislature of Alaska.

This day was established in February 1988 after her speech in support of the Anti-Discrimination Act to outlaw discriminatory practices against Alaska Natives across the territory. The event was sponsored by the Alaska Native Brotherhood and Alaska Native Sisterhood. The collectible coin will go on sale this year and the Tlingit Nation will be the first Alaska Native to appear on U.S currency.
